About South Gate
South Gate is one of central Sarasota's established neighborhoods, laid out in the mid-1950s on part of a 1,240-acre tract of former citrus groves that also became Forest Lakes Country Club Estates and Village Green. Developers Rolland King and Frank Smith opened the first model homes near Siesta Drive and School Avenue in March 1955, and the South Gate Shopping Center, now Westfield SouthGate, opened nearby in 1957. Some of the original citrus trees still grow in backyards.
The homes are single-family, most of them mid-century, with newer homes built where older ones were replaced; the newest date from 2026. Recent asking prices have run from about $359,000 to $2.3 million.
The neighborhood's landmark is the South Gate Community Center on Phillippi Creek at South Gate Circle, a hall designed by Victor Lundy of the Sarasota School of Architecture with a pool that has been in use since 1956. The building and pool are designated historic by Sarasota County, and the South Gate Community Association, with voluntary membership, owns and maintains them.
