Don Pedro Island is one of the bridgeless barrier islands off the Cape Haze coast of Charlotte County, part of the chain with Palm Island to the north and Little Gasparilla Island to the south. It has the Gulf of Mexico on the west and the Intracoastal Waterway on the east. Don Pedro Island State Park takes up part of the island, and the park keeps all but foot traffic from passing between Palm Island and Little Gasparilla Island.

Most of the homes on this page are in Colony Don Pedro, platted in phases beginning in 1986 along South Gulf Boulevard, with the older Don Pedro Beach plat of 1961 just to the south. Charlotte County records list about 65 single-family homes across the two, nearly all of them waterfront. The houses are raised on pilings, with wood decks, screened porches and metal roofs, and some have elevators. Colony Don Pedro has property owners' associations, and the island is zoned under the county's Bridgeless Barrier Island district.

Getting on and off means the Palm Island Transit car ferry, about six minutes across the Intracoastal Waterway, or a private boat. The mainland landing is off Panama Boulevard near Placida Road. From there Placida Road runs north to Englewood, and Gasparilla Road runs east to SR 776 and on to Port Charlotte and I-75 at Kings Highway.

Don Pedro Island FAQ

How do you get to Don Pedro Island?

There is no bridge. Palm Island Transit runs a car ferry across the Intracoastal Waterway, about a six-minute crossing, serving Palm Island, Knight Island and Don Pedro Island. The mainland landing is reached from Placida Road or Gasparilla Road by way of Panama Boulevard. Annual and flex barge passes are tied to a specific vehicle, and heavy or high-profile vehicles can be held back by high winds and low tides. You can also come and go by private boat.

Which county is Don Pedro Island in?

Don Pedro Island is in Charlotte County and uses Placida mailing addresses in ZIP code 33946. It is not part of Boca Grande, the village on Gasparilla Island to the south, which is in Lee County.

What building rules apply on the island?

The homes are zoned BBI, Charlotte County's Bridgeless Barrier Island district, and the county has a separate community plan for Don Pedro, Knight Island, Bocilla Islands and Thornton Key. Colony Don Pedro also has property owners' associations, one for the community and one for Phases IV and V. Read the association documents and recorded restrictions, and check county zoning and permits before planning any work.

What about flood zones and insurance?

Under the FEMA maps effective December 15, 2022, homes here fall in VE, AE and Coastal A coastal flood zones, often more than one on the same lot. Colony Don Pedro homes are raised on wood pilings with the living space above. Ask for the elevation certificate and get flood and wind insurance quotes before you commit.

  • Janelle is fantastic. We recently were able to sell our home in one week at 1% over asking price. I believe that the professional photos and staging coupled with Janelle helping us price competitively led to this success. We closed in one month and are so very grateful for Janelle and her help with the sale of our property.

  • Janelle did a great job selling our house. We have worked with 4 realtors over the past 19 years in FL, and she was by far the best. She is very knowledgeable about the real estate market, and was great at communicating with us throughout the sales process. Her responses to our emails and texts were very detailed and timely. She was also very proactive with recommendations on how to get our house ready for sale, and she went above and beyond to make sure our house was sparkling clean and staged appropriately to make sure our house stood out compared to others. The video she created for our...
