Port Charlotte is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Charlotte County, and with 60,625 residents at the 2020 census it is the most populous community in the county. Because it is unincorporated, it is governed by the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners. The community sits at the north end of the Charlotte Harbor estuary, northwest of Punta Gorda, where the Peace and Myakka Rivers flow into the harbor. The census area covers 32.3 square miles, about 12 percent of it water. Port Charlotte was planned and developed beginning in the 1950s by the General Development Corporation, led by the Mackle brothers.

Homes over $1 million in Port Charlotte are mostly on the water. Grassy Point Estates, platted in 1990, has custom homes on Alligator Bay, and in South Bayview Estates, platted in 1998, every lot is a waterfront lot. Charlotte County maintains many residential waterways through municipal service benefit units; the Edgewater North Waterway Unit, for example, pays for dredging and navigation markers in its canals and at the mouths of the Sunrise and Elkcam channels. Farther west along State Road 776, with Port Charlotte mailing addresses, are Riverwood, a gated golf community of about 1,300 acres, and South Gulf Cove, a canal community whose waterways reach open water through a county-operated lock.

US 41, the Tamiami Trail, runs through Port Charlotte, with Port Charlotte Town Center at 1441 Tamiami Trail and two hospitals nearby: AdventHealth Port Charlotte on Harbor Boulevard and HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital on Olean Boulevard. Punta Gorda Airport (PGD), with Allegiant and Sun Country flights to more than 50 destinations, is about 30 minutes from Port Charlotte Town Center by car. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers is about 65 minutes south, and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) is about 70 minutes north.

Port Charlotte Beach Park on Harbor Boulevard is a 16-acre bayfront county park with a sand beach, a boardwalk and fishing pier, a boat ramp, a kayak launch, a heated pool and a recreation center. Charlotte Sports Park is the spring training home of the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Mid-County Regional Library is on Forrest Nelson Boulevard. Port Charlotte was hit hard by Hurricane Charley in 2004 and Hurricane Ian in 2022, and Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought storm surge to the county in 2024, so flood zones, elevation and construction dates matter when comparing homes on the water.

No. Port Charlotte is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Charlotte County, governed by the Charlotte County Board of County Commissioners. Many homes outside the census area, including Riverwood and South Gulf Cove, also have Port Charlotte mailing addresses.

Most are on the water. Who maintains the canals in Port Charlotte?

What should I know about flood zones in Port Charlotte?

Charlotte County's current FEMA flood maps took effect December 15, 2022. High-risk zones start with A or V, and flood insurance is required for federally backed mortgages there. The Coastal A Zone marks areas where waves of 1.5 to 3 feet can occur, and construction there must meet V-zone standards. Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought storm surge of 3 to 8 feet to parts of the county in 2024. The county's Forerunner tool shows the flood zone, base flood elevation and elevation certificates for an address.

Port Charlotte is served by Charlotte County Public Schools. Schools in Port Charlotte include Port Charlotte High School, Port Charlotte Middle School, Murdock Middle School, and Meadow Park, Neil Armstrong, Peace River and Kingsway elementary schools; Myakka River Elementary serves the South Gulf Cove area. Charlotte Technical College is on Cochran Boulevard. School assignments vary by address.
