It lies off State Road 776 (McCall Road), between Gulfstream Boulevard, San Domingo Boulevard and Willmington Boulevard, near the Charlotte Harbor shoreline. The area is unincorporated, so roads, drainage and waterways are managed by Charlotte County through municipal service benefit units. Harbor West, recorded as Harbor West of South Gulf Cove, is a section within the community.

The neighborhood is laid out around a network of residential canals. The canals reach open water through a lock that the county operates with lock tenders, and the South Gulf Cove Waterway Benefit Unit pays for dredging, repair or replacement of the waterways, canals and lock, lock operation and cattail removal in the Interceptor Lagoon waterway. For fiscal year 2025, the unit's rate was $50 for waterfront lots and $25 for dry lots. A separate South Gulf Cove street and drainage unit maintains the roads.
